Special thanks for establishing the program in Montana go to: the Montana Broadcasters Association; the Montana Association of Chiefs of Police; and the Montana Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association. |
| Steps for Activation: |
The investigating officer contacts the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) of the Department of Justice and requests the assistance of the Division of Criminal Investigation. Once the local and state investigators confirm that the case meets AMBER Alert criteria, the alert is activated. Available information descriptions of the child and abductor, motor vehicle information and/or photographs is relayed to the public via television and radio broadcasters, the Criminal Justice Information Network, the Department of Justice web site and the terminals of the Montana Lottery. The alert will include a toll-free telephone number to call with tips or sightings. |

Montanas statewide Amber Alert program was implemented in Feb. 2003. |
| Criteria for Activation: |
The child must be 17 years old or younger, or have a proven mental or physical disability. The child must be in imminent danger of serious injury or death. There must be enough descriptive information available to believe that broadcasting it will assist law enforcement in recovering the child. The local law enforcement agency of jurisdiction must recommend the alert. |
