MAKING SURE YOUR KIDS HAVE A SAFE HALLOWEEN

  • Trick-or-treat with a group, and take along a parent or teen-aged brother or sister.
  • Stay outside the homes you visit.
  • Take a flashlight and walk on the sidewaIks.
  • Wear make-up instead of a mask that inhibits your vision.
  • Cross streets at the crosswalks and stay away from cars.
  • Trust your instincts! Stay away from any strange situations.
  • Wear a costume that is light in color and not too long. Add something that glows in the dark or is reflective.
  • Trick-or-Treat in neighborhoods you know and trust and that are well-lit. Stay out of dark alleys, dark stairwells, and remote locations.
  • Discuss your Halloween route with your parents and the time you will return.
  • Be sure all treats are wrapped and sealed. Eat them only after a parent checks them first.
  • If you do not feel safe Trick-or-Treating, do not Trick-or-Treat.

Prepaid Card Helps Kids Call Home

It's getting late, and your son needs a ride home after baseball practice. But some of the tougher kids are hanging around, and he doesn't really feel comfortable walking home alone. He's got no change for a pay phone, and might get it taken from him if he did. What should he do?

And what should you do, as his parents? One answer is the Klaas Foundation's prepaid calling card, developed in cooperation with Petaluma, California, telemanagement firm, MTC. With this card tucked into his pocket, your child can use any pay phone for free by dialing a toll-free number, entering an ID number and then dialing his or her home.

Cards are sold through MTC for $10, and can be increased by $5 increments. When the amount of money credited to a card is running low, the customer will be notified for a renewal. The tan card, featuring a portrait of a Leonardo da Vinci child, will be available November 1, 1995. For more information, please fax 800/206-2600.

A's Polly Day a Winner

B aseball took a swing at crime against children on September 16, when the Oakland A's dedicated their home game against the Minnesota Twins to the memory of murder victim Polly Klaas. Played in her name, the team honored the Foundation's ongoing campaign to educate the public about crime prevention. Inspired by her memory, the A's walloped the Twins, 6-1. Serious consideration is being given to making every game a Polly Klaas Day!
