{"id":1429,"date":"2014-03-25T19:32:31","date_gmt":"2014-03-26T02:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/?p=1429"},"modified":"2018-04-03T09:09:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T16:09:59","slug":"victim-advocates-visit-capitol-to-seek-legislative-support-for-at-risk-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/victim-advocates-visit-capitol-to-seek-legislative-support-for-at-risk-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"Victim Advocates Visit Capitol to Seek Legislative Support for At-Risk Youth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>By Meghan Moroney<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1430\" src=\"http:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/003-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"003\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/003-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/003-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/003-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.klaaskids.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/003.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><span class=\"dropcap\">M<\/span>embers of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightcrime.org\/state\/california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fight Crime: Invest in Kids<\/a>, national\u00a0anti-crime\u00a0organization of police chiefs, sheriffs, district attorneys and victim advocates with 400 members in California and close to 5,000 members nationwide, visited\u00a0the Capitol today to urge legislators\u00a0and administration officials to support evidence-based\u00a0programs proven to keep children in school and away from crime.<\/p>\n<p><b>Marc Klaas<\/b> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/local\/Michelle-Les-Family-Police-Respond-to-Dateline-Report-186586871.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Krystine Dinh<\/a> of The KlaasKids Foundation, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/05\/13\/us\/13bcguns.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Griffin Dix<\/a> of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, joined other\u00a0Fight Crime: Invest in Kids\u00a0<i>California<\/i>\u00a0members\u00a0in meetings with over 20 key policymakers and\u00a0administration officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting kids prepared for success in school, and then keeping them\u00a0in the classroom and on track to graduate are two of the most effective ways\u00a0to keep our streets and communities safe,\u201d said\u00a0Fight Crime: Invest in Kids\u00a0<i>California<\/i>\u00a0State Director\u00a0<b>Brian Lee.<\/b> \u201cWe\u2019re fortunate to have so many law enforcement leaders and victim advocates as members who recognize this and work to support policies and funding for programs that help keep kids off the streets and away from crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of\u00a0Fight Crime: Invest in Kids\u00a0<i>California<\/i>\u00a0called on legislators from both sides of the aisle to increase state funding for programs scientifically\u00a0proven to steer kids away from crime,\u00a0such as\u00a0high-quality early\u00a0education and dropout prevention strategies that address truancy and chronic absence. It is estimated that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightcrime.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/National%20BTS%20Report.pdf\">a 10-percentage-point increase in high school graduation rates would reduce violent crimes by 20 percent, and could prevent 400 murders and 20,000 aggravated assaults.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Research shows that kids who receive high-quality early education and\u00a0care are more likely to graduate from high school and less likely to ever\u00a0become involved in crime. Fight Crime: Invest in Kids\u00a0<i>California\u00a0<\/i>members\u00a0asked lawmakers to support <a href=\"http:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201320140SB837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SB 837<\/a>, a bill authored by Senate President pro Tempore Darrell Steinberg that would make early education available to all 4-year-olds by expanding the state\u2019s transitional kindergarten program.<\/p>\n<p>Fight Crime: Invest in Kids\u00a0<i>California\u00a0<\/i>members also\u00a0asked lawmakers to support AB 1866 (Bocanegra), which would help identify early warning signs for dropout by tracking school attendance in CALPADS, the state\u2019s longitudinal student data system. California in one of just four states that does not tracked individualized school attendance.<\/p>\n<p>For kids already involved in the juvenile justice system, intensive family therapies, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fftinc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Functional Family Therapy<\/a> (FFT) and <a href=\"http:\/\/mstservices.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multisystemic Therapy<\/a> (MST), have been shown to cut re-arrests by as much as 50 percent. <a href=\"http:\/\/sd06.senate.ca.gov\/news\/2013-12-19-steinberg-announces-mentally-ill-offender-crime-reduction-grant-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Mentally Ill Offender Crime Reduction <\/a>(MIOCR) program used to support these evidenced-based therapy programs, yet funding for the program was eliminated several years ago.
